African startup funding crossed $1.3 billion as of June 3, putting the ecosystem within striking distance of last year's first-half record of $1.42B. Between January and May, startups raised $1.044B — nearly matching the $1.056B raised in the same period of 2025. Electric mobility company Spiro led with a $215M round on June 1, while fintechs Nala ($50M for stablecoin payments) and LemFi (€30M for immigrant financial services) drove activity. M&A activity is also accelerating, with over 50 acquisition transactions recorded in 2026 totaling over $100M combined.

Zambia had a strong week. The Ministry of Technology and Science deepened digital cooperation with China, meeting Ambassador Han Jing in Lusaka to advance infrastructure, ICT capacity building, and technology transfer. Separately, Zambian startup Entomo Farm — which converts organic waste into high-protein animal feed and fertiliser using black soldier fly farming — was selected for the MassChallenge 2026 accelerator, one of just 14 African startups chosen from nearly 2,000 global applicants.

The African Development Bank released a report projecting AI could add $1 trillion to Africa's GDP by 2035, contingent on investment in digital infrastructure, skills development, and governance frameworks. Other AI highlights from the MassChallenge cohort include Nuru Solutions (Kenya), which combines satellite imagery and ML for smallholder farmer credit and insurance, and FirstAI.d (Nigeria), building AI-powered emergency response with intelligent ambulance routing.

The International Space Summit Africa (ISSA) 2026 convened June 2–4 in Pretoria, while Planet secured an eight-figure contract extension with the U.S. NGA for maritime surveillance. Starlink's upcoming V3 satellites promise 10x downlink capacity, which could meaningfully improve connectivity across African markets later this year.

The Africa Energy Forum 2026 runs June 16–19, focused on industrial-scale infrastructure beyond basic energy access. Analysis from InforCapital flags converging capital across the energy transition, AI compute buildout, and Africa's $400B infrastructure opportunity — suggesting significant cross-sector investment ahead. In fintech, Nigerian payments company Kora joined IATA's payment network to power airline settlements across Africa, tapping into growing intra-African air travel under the SAATM framework.
